2026 AMA Mandatory Chest + Back Protection Rule: What Racers Need to Know – Roost Guards vs. Impact Protectors
Starting January 1, 2026, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) requires chest and back protection for every competitor in AMA-sanctioned motocross, supercross, SMX Next, ATVMX, and amateur events.
The Official Rule
“It is mandatory that chest and back protection be worn by all competitors. The protector may be worn under or over the jersey, and it should cover the sternum, anterior ribs, posterior ribs, and spine from T1 to T12.”
Riders without compliant gear will not be allowed on the track.
Roost Guards vs. Impact Protectors – Key Differences
| Feature | Roost Guard / Deflector | Impact Protector / Chest Protector |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Job | Deflect flying rocks, dirt, and roost | Absorb energy from crashes and hard impacts |
| Back Coverage | Sometimes partial | Full spine coverage (T1–T12) required |
| Protection Level | Basic deflection | Higher impact absorption (CE/EN rated) |
| AMA 2026 Compliant? | Basic models usually NO | YES – when properly rated |
Understanding the Ratings
- CE Level 1 / Level 2 – European safety standard for motorcycle gear. Most quality motocross protectors are CE Level 1.
- EN 14021 – Specific standard for motocross stone/roost shields (common on Moose Racing models).
